Factors Influencing Student Attitudes towards the Study of ICT as a G. C. E. (A/L) Subject: A Case of Schools in Piliyandala Education Zone

Abstract: The Sri Lankan government has made considerable investment in promoting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education in schools. Nationally, the number of students selecting ICT as a G.C.E. (A/L) subject has grown substantially from 2015 to 2020. This study investigates the factors influencing student attitudes towards studying ICT at the Advanced Level, with reference to schools in the Piliyandala Education Zone. The study pursued four objectives: identifying factors influencing students’ attitudes towards ICT at A/L; examining the relationship between ICT subject selection and other subject streams; determining the relationship between positive attitudes and academic achievement; and assessing the current ICT environment in selected schools. A qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews and observation with a randomly selected sample of 50 Grade 12 students across five schools. Data were analyzed using descriptive methods and independent sample t-tests via SPSS. Findings revealed that job market demand, teacher quality, and computer laboratory facilities are the primary factors influencing subject selection. Most students combine ICT with the technology stream. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant relationship between positive student attitudes and academic performance. The study recommends revising the ICT syllabus to align with industry trends, strengthening teacher professional development, and upgrading school laboratory infrastructure.
