Effects of Digital Supply Chain Information on Medicine Availability in Pharmacies: A Case of Muhanga District (2021–2025)

Abstract: This study examined the effect of electronic inventory management on medicine availability in pharmacies in Muhanga District, Rwanda. Specifically, the study assessed the effect of electronic inventory management on medicine availability. The study adopted a descriptive and correlational research design using a quantitative approach. The target population comprised 112 respondents, including 63 retail pharmacy staff and 49 district pharmacy staff. A census approach was used, and 105 validquestionnaires were returned, representing a response rate of 93.7%. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-Moment correlation, and regression analysis were used. The findings showed that electronic inventory management supports accurate stock recording, regular inventory updates, stock-level monitoring, identification of medicines requiring replenishment, and timely restocking. Correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between electronic inventory management and medicine availability (r = .985, p < .001). Regression analysis also indicated a statistically significant relationship. The study concluded that effective electronic inventory management supports systematic stock control and helps pharmacies respond to potential medicine shortages. The study recommends ensuring accurate and regular updating of electronic stock records, establishing routine stock monitoring and appropriate reorder levels, and providing pharmacy staff with training on the effective use of electronic inventory systems.
