Effect of Packaging Management Practices on Supply Chain Sustainability of Manufacturing Companies: A case of Sulfo Industries Ltd

Abstract: This study examined the effect of packaging material selection on supply chain sustainability at Sulfo-Rwanda Industries Ltd. Specifically, it assessed the effect of packaging material selection on supply chain sustainability. The study employed a descriptive and explanatory research design using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The target population comprised 109 employees from 11 departments, and a census approach was used. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, interview guides, and documentary review and analyzed using SPSS. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and thematic analysis were used. The findings indicated that packaging material selection had a positive and statistically significant effect on supply chain sustainability. Regression analysis showed **B = 0.197, β = 0.232, t = 3.788, and Sig. = 0.000**. The findings highlighted the importance of recyclability, environmental suitability, lightweight characteristics, durability, and material efficiency in supporting supply chain sustainability. The study concluded that appropriate packaging material selection was an important factor in strengthening supply chain sustainability at Sulfo-Rwanda Industries Ltd. The study recommended increasing the use of recyclable and environmentally suitable packaging materials, strengthening packaging quality requirements for storage and transportation, and establishing sustainability criteria in packaging material procurement and supplier selection.
