Effect of Supply Chain Risk Management on Operational Performance: A Case Study of Rwanda Medical Supply Ltd

Abstract: This study examined the effect of supply-side risks on operational performance at Rwanda Medical Supply Ltd. Specifically, it assessed the effect of supply-side risks on operational performance at Rwanda Medical Supply Ltd. The study employed a descriptive and correlational research design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The target population comprised 147 employees from procurement, logistics and transportation, warehouse management, finance, supply planning, and distribution departments. A census sampling technique was used to include all members of the target population. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and semi-structured interview guides and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, regression analysis, and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings indicated that supply-side risks were significantly associated with operational performance at Rwanda Medical Supply Ltd. The findings further showed that supplier delays, poor supplier quality, dependence on few suppliers, supplier evaluation, and supplier disruptions were important supply-side risk factors affecting operational activities. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a positive and statistically significant relationship between supply-side risks and operational performance (r = .631, p < .001). The study concludes that effective management of supplier-related risks is important for maintaining reliable procurement, inventory management, timely delivery, and efficient distribution of medical supplies. The study recommends strengthening supplier monitoring and evaluation, diversifying suppliers, maintaining alternative sources of supply, and developing appropriate contingency measures to reduce supplier-related disruptions and improve operational performance at Rwanda Medical Supply Ltd.
